Tuning & Repair FAQs

  • While we can’t give a specific amount of days between tunes, we recommend looking for signs that you need a tune. These signs include slower skiing, slow turn initiations, no visible base structure, and being unable to hold an edge on your turns.

It’s important to get your skis tuned, but you can only base grind your ski about 6 times before needing to upgrade your skis. However, you can tune your skis many more times with edge sharpening and waxing

  • You should be waxing your skis every 4-6 ski days depending on the snow conditions and wax used. In general, the better the conditions, the less you need to wax. If you’re noticeably skiing slower, it may be time for a wax.

  • No, you can drop off your skis anytime we’re open. You can book online for a quicker drop-off.

  • If your skis start to feel slow, this means you need a wax or tune!

The US Ski Team uses this very machine at their Park City Headquarters. Read more about it on Wintersteiger’s website.

  • During Alta’s Ski Season, tunes are overnight, and other mounts or repairs typically take 48 hours, but this varies based on the day and volume of work we have.

  • While ski manufacturers equipment is ready to go out of the wrapper, we recommend a full tune before your first day on snow to ensure the edges are sharp, the wax is right for the conditions, and you have a solid base structure.

  • Any work we do with your bindings requires your boots.

  • While you do basics touch-ups yourself, professional shops with machines like the Wintersteiger Jupiter deliver more consistent, world-class results safely with our expert Ski Techs.

  • Yes! Core shots and deep scratches from rocks affect your skiing performance, but also can rot the core of your ski if they aren’t addressed promptly. We use P-Tex and/or base welding to fix the affected areas.
